The Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act
The Marine Protection, Research and Sancturies Act, also commonly called the Ocean Dumping Act, was developed to prevent waste from being dumped into the ocean. It was amended in the year 1988 to also prevent sewage sludge and industrial waste from being dumped into the ocean. This law makes the transportation of waste materials from the U.S. to be dumped illegal and prohibits the transportation of waste from anywhere for the purpose of ocean dumping. Dumping waste not from the U.S. into U.S. waters is unlawful according to this legislation. The Ocean Dumping act is alsoresponsible for designating an appropriate dumping site for waste materials ("Summary of Marine" 2006).
